Conservation Director
I. Mission
The Conservation Director lead the preparation and implementation of WWF-Ukraine’s conservation strategy in the framework of WWF-CEE’s regional conservation strategy and the respective work plans, and supervises their implementation. S/he leads the key conservation experts of the team and liaises with colleagues and counterparts from the region and the network. As a member of WWF-Ukraine´s Senior Management Team, the Conservation Director is also responsible for integrating the objectives of the conservation programme with those of other departments.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. General responsibilities
- Leads the preparation of WWF-Ukraine’s conservation strategy in the framework of the regional conservation strategy of WWF-CEE, including analysis of the context and the conditions, and organizes the necessary processes
- Leads the preparation of WWF-Ukraine’s annual conservation workplan and the related processes; monitors their implementation, prepares regular management reports and analyses, and proposes adaptive management measures
- Leads or supports, as agreed with line manager, fundraising efforts in close cooperation with Country CEO and Fundraising, Marketing, Communication, Corporate (FUMACO) functional lead
- Acts as Line Manager for key conservation programme managers and experts, according to the organization’s organogram, contributes to the development of staff in through e.g. annual appraisals, and promotes relevant WWF-CEE standards and procedures, plays the role of coach and mentor for colleagues
- Leads the Conservation Management Team (CMT) which consist of conservation programme managers and experts
- Fosters innovation and a standard of excellence and ensures the work processes are well resourced and completed on time
- Provides input or take the lead in developing position papers/strategic documents on specific issues of conservation interest for WWF-CEE and/or WWF-Ukraine
- Acts as a speaker and representative on conservation issues on international and national affairs
- Provides expert input to communication activities and outputs – e.g. campaigns, press releases, and other materials
- Manages relations with strategic external experts and partner organizations
- Leads strategic initiatives for WWF-Ukraine
III. Working Relationships
1. Internal
- Report to Country CEO
- Act as deputy of CEO according to by-laws or internal procedures
- Member of national Senior Management Team
- Manage and supervise key Conservation staff, coordinating Programme/Project Managers
- Depending on internal agreements and needs, work with WWF Global Practices and Communities of Practice team members and conservation colleagues of other WWF-CEE offices
- Work very closely with Fundraising, Marketing, Communication, Corporate (FUMACO) functional lead and Finance & Administration functional lead
- Work closely with Regional Conservation Director and Regional Conservation Leads
2. External
- Represent WWF-Ukraine in front of relevant third parties
- Manage relations with key external partners in coordination with the Country CEO
IV. Minimum Qualifications
1. Knowledge and Education
- Advanced technical qualifications or university degree
- Good knowledge of programme management, financial planning and budgeting, project fundraising and human resource management
- Sound understanding of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development issues in Ukraine as well as possible solutions
- At least 8 years of professional experience in conservation/environmental management
- Proven experience in managing at least a small team
- Proven experience in budgeting and operational administration, as well as change management processes, project management, and working in an international context
- Proven ability to manage interdisciplinary professional staff
- Decision-making skills with strong business acumen and drive for results
- Diplomacy and cultural skills to work with a broad array of individuals from a variety of backgrounds
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in both English and Ukrainian
- Proven ability to fundraise and manage funds and projects
- Ability to work well within the national and larger international WWF team, as well as independently
- Sensitive to different cultures and diversity
- The employee develops and uses key competencies and skills corresponding to the position
