The Regenerate Ukraine Initiative is a joint initiative of WWF-CEE and WWF-Ukraine to contribute to the post-war reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine in a sustainable, environmentally, biodiversity and climate-friendly way.
In close cooperation with the State, communities, various NGOs, donors and partner organizations, we have focused our work on the following four areas:
-
Mainstreaming nature - developing recommendations for policy makers. Our recommendations aim to advocate for decision-making that promotes the implementation of a sustainable, climate-neutral, inclusive and nature-friendly process of Ukraine's renaissance;
Since the launch of the initiative, we have worked with the Boston Consalting Group to produce the report 'Ukraine: Sustainable Economic Recovery for People and Nature'.
Our team also contributed to the development of the sustainability, environmental and ecological proposals included in the final text of the Ukraine Facility, and many of our proposals have been included in the latest draft of the Ukraine Facility Plan.
Our team was also formally thanked for the recommendations and expertise provided by An Environmental Compact for Ukraine, which was developed by the High-Level Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War, Chaired by Andriy Yermak and Margot Wallström.
-
Green Infrastructure - developing and advocating for the implementation of nature, biodeversity and climate-friendly infrastructure planning tools; In addition to continung our active advocacy work, we launched a GEF8 project with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to integrate biodiversity conservation into the preliminary planning of linear transport infrastructure in Ukraine.
-
Incubate the Future - to help the State, communities and businesses accelerate the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions, including promoting the use of nature-based solutions at all levels and developing climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture and forestry;
We developed an online platform for Nature-based solutions, recognised by and part of an EU-wide network.
-
Protecting natural heritage - restoring, conserving and improving the management of critical habitats and ecosystems.
We identified and protected 70.000 ha of old growth forests, published a report on forest management in areas with unexploded ordnance, prepared translocation of bison to secure a herd near Kyiv, published analysis on wildlife crimes and trained 60 prosecutors, released 2,500 juvenile sturgeon, with more to come.
