Conservation Director

WWF is the world's largest conservation organization, founded in 1961. We're active in over 100 countries and have over 8000 employees. WWF Central and Eastern Europe is responsible for leading and to a significant extent implementing WWF's efforts to preserve, restore and sustainably manage the natural values of the Danube-Carpathian ecoregion, which we also call Green Heart of Europe. With a team of nearly 200 highly specialised proffessionals, we are working across political borders through and ecoregional approach based on model projects, influencing policy, networking, capacity building, communication and crisis responce.

As part of WWF Central and Eastern Europe, WWF Ukraine is primarily engaged with forests, freshwater, wildlife as well as public policy, corporate engagement, marketing as well as finance and administration. To date, WWF Ukraine has built a solid record on conservation restoration and sustainable management of natural resources with main focus on forests, freshwater, wildlife, public policy and engagement.

We are looking for a dynamic and committed professional to join as Conservation Director, leading the preparation and implementation of WWF-Ukraine's conservation strategy, ensuring alignment with and strengthening of WWF-CEE's regional conservation strategy and the respective work plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading the preparation of WWF Ukraine's conservation strategy in the framework of the regional conservation strategy of WWF-CEE, including analysis of the context and the conditions, and organizes the necessary processes  
  • Leading the preparation of WWF Ukraine's annual conservation workplan and the related processes; monitoring their implementation, preparing regular management reports and analyses, and proposing adaptive management measures
  • Leading or supporting, as agreed, the fundraising efforts in close cooperstion with Country CEO and Fundraising, Marketing, Communication, Corporate (FUMACO) functional lead
  • Leading the Conservation Management Team (CMT) and acting as Line Manager for key conservation programme managers and experts, according to the organization's organogram, contributing to the development of staff throught e.g. annual appraisals, and promoting relevant WWF-CEE standards and procedures, playing the role of coach and mentor for colleagues
  • Acting as a member of WWF-Ukraine's Senior Management Team and integrating the objectives of the conservation programme with those of other departaments 
  • Fostering innovation and a standart of excellence and ensuring the work processes are well resourced and completed on time
  • Providing input or taking the lead in developing position papers/strategic documents on specific issues of conservation interest for WWF-CEE and/or WWF-Ukraine
  • Acting as a speaker and representative on conservation issues on international affairs 
  • Providing expert input to communication activities and outputs (e.g. campaigns, press releases, and other materials) 
  • Managing relations with strategic external experts and partner organizations 
  • Leading strategic initiatives for WWF-Ukraine
Requirements: 
  • Higher education – university degree in the field of natural sciences, natural resources management, sustainability, policy or other related field
  • At least 8 years of proffesional experience in conservation / environmental management
  • Proven experience in budgeting and operational administration, as well as change management processes, project management, and working in an international context. 
  • Goof knowelege of programme management, financial planning and budgeting, project fundraising and human resource menegement 
  • Proven experience in managing a team
  • Sound understanding of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development issues in Ukraine as well as pissible solutions 
Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven ability to manage interdisciplinary professional staff
  • Decision-making skills with strong business acumen and drive for results 
  • Diplomacy and cultural skills to work with a broad array of individuals from a variety of backgrounds 
  • Sensitive to different cultures and diversity 
  • Proven ability to fundraise and manage funds and projects 
  • Ability to work well within the national and larger international WWF team, as well as independently 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in both English and Ukrainian 
  • Alignment with the core values of the WWF organization: Courage, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration.
